5 Reasons to Shop Local

Sales in small, independent local shops grew by a whopping 69% between March and June of 2020. A quarter of British shoppers said they were visiting local stores more than they ever before.

Why?

“Generally, what’s happened is that in lockdown, people realised what was available to them locally and have been pleasantly surprised by what they found so want to keep shopping there,” says Andrew Goodacre, CEO of the British Independent Retail Association. (BIRA)

And here’s why shopping local is so beneficial:

1 – You’re supporting the local economy

Local businesses are the backbone of our economy. Research on spending by local authorities shows that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63p stayed in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business. This is because local shop owners, who you are spending your money with, will then put that money back into your local community by going into local pubs and restaurants etc, thus circulating the money and allowing your community to thrive. So by spending money in your local shop you can do your bit to aid our national recovery across the country.

2 – Personality and character

Have you ever been into a shop where the goal of the owner is for every single person in the shop to leave with a smile on their face? That’s exactly what we do at BeerGinVino. And we’re not alone. The most wonderful thing about small, independent businesses is that they are run by people, not by boards, stockholders or algorithms. We really care about your experience and we believe in making your day better, whatever is happening in the world.

3 – Deals and Offers

You might be surprised to see just how competitive the prices are in your local shops. We price check against the big stores regularly and do our best to provide you with the very best deals we can. At the moment, we’re offering same-day free delivery exclusively to our locals in Thame, Haddenham, LongCrendon, Towersey and Moreton. It’s perfect for our customers who want or need to stay snuggled up at home!

4 – Customer Service

You can’t beat the personal touch of a local owner who knows everyone in the neighbourhood and who chats to their suppliers directly. It is also worth remembering that local shops stock an inventory based on their own customer’s choices rather than national fashion trends. This is so you can find what you want rather than finding what they want to sell you… So just let Kevin know if you can’t find your favourite tipple!

5 – Tradition & Community

Supporting your local business over their larger, international rivals is somewhat of a British tradition. Unlike other countries, Britain has always tried to keep the focus on local businesses. At BeerGinVino, we seek out and supply the finest local and regional producers to do our bit too. Thriving local businesses boost our communities and generate revenue to support council services such as libraries, parks and roads.

“Small businesses are the beating heart of communities and town centres up and down the country, and they will be at the centre of the recovery.” – Michelle Ovens, Director of Small Business Saturday UK and Founder of Small Business Britain. So, next time you shop local, give yourself a big pat on the back and remind yourself just how brilliant you are.
